Hi DC Yelpers,

In mid-August, I'm moving from the right coast to the left one (Boston to San Francisco, though I'm starting the trip in my native NY) and I'm taking a train cross-country.  The Amtrak route I've planned makes some stops, and the first is your fair city.

So, here's your mission, kids:

I've got about 6 hours to spend in DC; no car, I'm on a strict budget, and I seriously do not want the train to leave without me, so sites/activities far from the station are a no-go.  

What do I do?

I love museums (particularly things that inolve art or dinosaurs or both), I'll probably get hungry at some point, and I also enjoy the great outdoors.  I also dig live music, but it will be mid-day, mid-week, so that might be tough.  So, please recommend the best of DC!

In 6 hours, you can check out the Air and Space museum in 3 hours or less depending on how long you take to read the descriptions of the exhibits. I haven't been to the other museums so I can't tell you if they're worth the trip. There are a lot of art museums and since all these museums are FREE you can take a quick look before your train departs DC.

The Union Station stop is where your Amtrak train comes into DC and from there the museums aren't that far away. Check out www.wmata.com for public transit and www.si.edu for more info on the museums.

You could take the DC Circulator bus to travel from Union Station to the Smithsonians.  It's only $1 each way and picks up every 5-10 minutes.  Or the take the metro subway train, but you will have to transfer at metro center to the orange/blue lines (which is not hard at all).  Anyway, have a good time in DC, and here's a link to information about the DC circulator bus: http://www.dccirculato.../

as for food-- avoid eating on the Smithsonian mall area-- there's nothing but hotdog vendors.  union station has a few shops/restaurants but they're a bit touristy.  f you're already at the National Gallery of Art or the Sculpture Garden, you can easily walk from there up to Teaism -- a great, casual and fairly inexpensive restaurant.  Read the rave reviews here:   http://www.yelp.com/bi...

i really don't have anything to add after ron's suggestions - if anything i wholeheartedly second his suggestions! hope you get to see and eat at some great places, it sounds like a neat trip.

Excellent, thanks guys!  I adore the Air & Space Museum--visited many times as a kid--and as hard as it is to not go back (and buy some astronaut ice cream while there), I think I might check out the Phillips Collection.  Dupont Circle seems like a neat area--and I think there's even a Teaism there?  The review definitely intrigued me.  

I also thought the reviews for Brickskellar and Kramer Books in the area were pretty awesome; anyone have any other cool Dupont Circle spots I should check out?  

Man...I hope I don't miss my train with all this cool stuff to do...
