What are your favorite camping sites in CA during the summer that are near a river or lake?  Fishing is a plus.

There's lots of awesome camping and cabins near the Trinity river up north and that offers pretty awesome strem/river fishing.  As far as I know, you can still fish there.  The Whiskeytown Lake areas and Shasta Lake areas offer good lake fishing and camping.

Also, I found Bear Creek in Santa Cruz to be an awesome secluded camping area that's great for hiking, and it's only about twenty minutes from civilization.  There are a variety of other great camping places in the Santa Cruz mountains, too.

yeah, i'd go north up to national forests (west of the sierras, kindof).  i once drove into basically nowhere, then hiked about 4 miles to an AMAZING alpine lake that looked just like an infinity pool with a tree replacing ocean vista (on the far end).  there were no weeds and no people, and i know there were two lakes on the way there in which people were fishing.  state forests/parks have different regs than federal parks (usually more lax) so you're likely to be able to fish in most of them.

i also stayed at a science research station perched on top of big sur (all houses must be outside of the viewshed of the 1, so it was up above a redwood grove with a stream/river) that was part of the UC extension system.  they might let you in if you contacted the specific caretaker of the site (there are at least 8 little outposts across CA), and it was the coolest shower (separate from house) i've ever seen in my life.

there are numerous campgrounds along the 1, too.  check out the area around the two big iconic bridges south of carmel.


tangential response?  ...a little.  

i hope it helps, though.  also, kirby cove (in the headlands) is beach-side and for groups.  google "goga.nps.gov"; for visitor center info/reservations.
