Hello NYC Yelpers!

I've been in New York for three and a half days, and today my boyfriend has suddenly come down with the most terrible cold!

I am looking for some creamy soup [broccoli, or potato/leek] to make the guy feel better... I'm on the border of Chinatown/Little Italy right now, any suggestions for a place in like a 15 block radius?

ick!! yes! there is something definitely going around in the air because im sure i have the same nasty cold he does! lots of rest i found out has been the only thing thats helped this particular virus...i would get him some spicy noodle or wonton soup from chinatown! thatll clear his sinuses! creamy broth might bring on more unnecessary phlegm...also some hot green tea w/ lemon and honey  for a soar throat has helped me...hope this helps!

Liza, the NYC talk boards get very little attention, so there's a good chance that by the time you get a helpful response, your boyfriend will be cured and/or you'll be back in California!

Unfortunately, I can't think of a place in or near your present location that has the creamy style you indicated. What immediately comes to mind are Whole Foods (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) and Manhattan Soup Man (http://www.yelp.com/bi...), but neither is near you. You definitely will find a lot of chicken-based soups in Chinatown or some hearty minestrone in Little Italy. Actually, you're not that far from Katz's Delicatessen (http://www.yelp.com/bi...), their soups might fit the bill.

BTW, when he's feeling up to it, try Joe's Shanghai (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) for the steamed buns!

Well, I see Janius made a liar out of me . . . usually it takes forever before someone posts to the NYC boards, if at all!

Liza, I know you didn't ask for a cold remedy, but the one that works miraculously for me is "Zicam," a homeopathic nasal gel that is sold over the counter, in Duane Reade and other pharmacies.  Ask the pharmacist about it.  Within 5 minutes of using it, my symptoms are GONE.  Good luck.  Hope your boyfriend gets better and the weather clears up, so you can have some fun.

THANKS GUYS!

I just found some GREAT potato/leek/spinach soup over at Bread [on Spring/Mott], so I'm good for the time being... But I'll definitely check out the other places - I have a feeling that we're going to want/need soup for a few more days. :(

Arlyne - I have a russian homeopathic thing that is almost exactly like Zicam - it really helps!

GG- This city is getting into the Yelpness! :)

Thanks again everybody! I hope no one else gets sicks!

Actually, something I find that's great for colds is congee (from Big Wong - I reviewed it...).  It's a very Asian thing...  I find that some people are put off by it.  It's something in the porridge type family and when served piping hot, it is very soothing.  I'd recommend a plain congee if he's really ill, since he can't taste anyways.  And, when he's feeling better, get the minced beef congee.  Hmmmm, I want one now!

According to http://www.adrugrecall... and http://www.zicamsideef...

Zicam can cause produce a negative side effect such as a loss of smell. I would be wary of taking this over the counter drug. There's also more links available if you do a search on google.

Nina - I'm russian, so the asian remedies don't scare me - russian stuff is surprisingly similar :)

Krazy - wow.. that's a little scary.. I'll check it out. Can you sugest any other sort of preventative meds?

remember the big crazy about cold-eeze and how it shortened the lifespan of the common cold? well, the sole ingredient was zinc...personally i hate taking losenges or putting anything in my nose, so why not just take zinc? its more potent than the losenges AND if you take it whenever you feel like you are coming down with something, itll prevent you from getting sick...ive also noticed that it works great on allergies!  shhh! this is a secret remedy...no one knows about...

Ok, so with the zinc and russian homeopathy, I'm still getting a cold [that's what you get for taking care of someone who's sick!] and now I need some soup... not a fan of the creamy stuff myself, but could go for something spicy.

I'm right by Chinatown, but don't know anything much about it [yet! I'm learning as fast as I can!] . What place is the best bet for really yummy hot and sour soup?

Wow!  Thank you so much, Krazy D., for the warning about Zicam and loss of smell.  I guess it was too good to be true, but Zicam got me through the holidays without having to cancel a single social event, so I thought it was a miracle drug.

HAHAHA.. aw... you guys are mean!

it actually looked like a jack russell mutt..

I won't touch strange animals at all now [I used to be all over anything fuzzy], and all my friends are now laughing and constantly saying things like: "oohh, look! A kitty! waaaait... maybe it's a SHIT CAT!"
